Caregiver Support for Veterans

U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs Caregiver Support Programs

Are you a Veteran in need of a caregiver? Are you a family member caring for a Veteran?

Did you know that the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs offers two programs for caregiver assistance to eligible Veterans? Those programs are the Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS) and, the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC).

These programs fall under the umbrella of the Caregiver Support Program. To apply for either program the Veteran must first be enrolled in VA health care. The program of General Caregiver Support Services aids General Caregivers providing care to an enrolled Veteran in need of personal care assistance with daily living activities or to a Veteran who needs supervision or protection due to neurological impairment, physical impairment, or injury.

The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers has several key requirements for the Veteran and the family member. The Veteran may designate a primary family caregiver and 2 secondary family caregivers to provide more intensive personal care related to any serious service connected injuries or illnesses incurred or aggravated in the line of duty.

Both programs offer caregiver training and support, respite care options and more.
